Harsh weather sidetracked traders across the eastern half of the U.S., and a ripple effect spread into other regions. Sales, shipments, and production all suffered as ice and snow reached into the Deep South. Other factors, including exchange rates and weakness in futures in the first half of the week, kept buyers on the sidelines. Reports that WesternS-P-F producers drew in sizable orders from Chinese buyers returning from their new-year holidays gave futures a boost Thursday, and spurred short covering.
