RE:Avius: Potential Hydrogen to Help Decarbonize Yukon Hydrogen used as an energy storage solution for renewable energy integration in mines could solve two problems at once. It could offer (1.) a source of dispatchable electricity, and (2) a zero-emission fuel option for mining equipment currently powered by diesel or other fossil fuels.
All operating mines in the Yukon are connected to the grid and using hydrogen for electricity is likely a more attractive option in mines not connected to the grid. It is important to note that there are proposed off-grid mines in the Yukon, so there could be a benefit to hydrogen in mines to generate electricity in the future.
Our research indicates that the technology readiness for hydrogen mining equipment is low, with the cold climate in the Yukon posing an additional challenge.
