Okay, but who besides a straw man makes that argument?

The question then is what role does solar activity play to influence the occurrence of volcanism and earthquakes?  From my reading I get the sense that it may trigger a stress already near it’s breaking point, but has no effect upon underlying endogenic factors.

You’re right again.   Someday the sun will go supernova, incinerate the earth, and all that you and I know that our species ever touched, shaped, wrote, or built will turn to dust and be gone.  Nothing we can do about it.

In the meanwhile, can’t we hope?  If we are going to live our lives either way, is it not better to have those happy years first?  Yes, there are dark times ahead, but mostly for the poor in regions already under stress today; and because of our fortunate position in the world, North America is self-sufficient in food and energy, and copper.
