Historic rock grab sampling is akin to getting out your door, and every outcrop you encounter you break a few chips into a bag and send into the laboratory. Since you a fatty, or if in the bush, you got miles to do each day, you break and put in bag, new bag new outcrop break and put in bag, repeat and do not look with a hand lens at the samples. Get the significance yet? The same as all exploration work, in this situation the grab samples were for gold so there was no followup where inspection of the broken rock with hand lens or visual inspection for “spodumene”.
