It has been a long time, years, since we have heard anything about the use of TSO3's technology to sterilze instruments contaminated with prions. Though Jakob-Creutzfeld Disease (the manifestation of BSE in humans) is rare in N. America, (1/1,000,000 annually), it is believed to be carried by 1/2000 persons in the UK. Transmission can occur through neurosurgical instruments that have been used in patients with this disease and such instruments presently are treated with sodium hypochlorite solution (which is extremely corrosive and can be damaging to instruments) followed by heat sterilization, though the latter is felt to be only variably effective. Instruments that cannot be so treated presently must be discarded and never used again. The ability to sterilize heat or sodium hypochlorite noncompatible instruments will be another major step forward and, again, put TSO3's technology in a class all its own.
That TSO3 is pursuing this claim first in France is an interesting one, presumably because the French have established a clear protocol for proof and testing of elimination of prions from instruments. Wouldn't it be something to have the WHO list the VP4, or a new sterilizer designed for the purpose, identify TSO3's technology as one of the only effective ways of sterilizing instruments from prion disease?
