Why not just sit and ask the LBN what will it take to get the mine going? As far as I have heard, BKM has tried ramming a sqaure peg into a round hole, expecting that after enough hammering it will fit... well, that isn't working, so why not engage them from a business/ partnership level, and ask what will it take. If they don't want to talk to John, then find someone who they will talk and confide in.
