if you had 1000$ of shares pre consolidation at 50 cents 
2000 shares 
put in another $1000 at 10cents a share  would have 10,000 shares
plus the converted shares of 285 shares

so 10,285 shares at total cost 2000$ cost per share less than 20 cents

also you would own greater percentage of company 

initially  2000 shares of 300 million shares
now     10,285 of 145 million shares
