B.C. Chamber of Commerce adds its voice in support of Northwest Transmission Line
SMITHERS, B.C. -- The Northwest Power Line Coalition applauded the B.C. Chamber of Commerce today for its endorsement of the Northwest Transmission Line.
At its annual general meeting in Whistler, B.C. Chamber of Commerce members recommended that that provincial government immediately resume the engineering and environmental permitting of the transmission line.
"We are very pleased to see the B.C. Chamber of Commerce support the northwest transmission line along Highway 37," said Pierre Lebel, spokesperson for the Northwest Power Line Coalition. "The B.C. Chamber is one of the largest and most influential organizations in the province and their support for the electrification of Highway 37 is significant."
According to the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, the northwest transmission line is a province-building initiative along the same lines as the Bennett Dam and Coquihalla Highway.
"We believe the northwest transmission line is an investment opportunity in the long term social, environmental and economic development of Northwest B.C. for the benefit of the entire province," said John Winter, President and CEO of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce. "The northwest transmission line would open up new opportunities in mining, tourism and green power projects in the Northwest part of the province."
The support of the B.C. Chamber of Commerce follows a similar endorsement of the northwest transmission line by the North Central Municipal Association (NCMA) earlier this month.
The Northwest Power Line Coalition includes the Northern Development Initiative Trust with its forty member communities, the Mining Association of British Columbia, the Association of Mineral Exploration of British Columbia, and a number of First Nations, mining companies, independent power producers, local businesses --- including engineering firms and equipment suppliers --- and concerned citizens.
