If a blacknight is accumulating shares they want to do it at the lowest possible prices. One way is to short the market enough shares to start a panic and scare weak hands into selling. Especially after a nice share price rise. Then they buy way more shares at lower shakeout prices, way more than they shorted. So they bought more than enough to cover short position and have added to their net accumulated position. Not hard to do with a weak shareholder base and a share price that has recently risen and some good market traders working for them.
