I saw exactly this happen with one of the tech stocks I watch.  The stock was so thinly traded, it would go days with zero trades.  Then a pension fund stared buying as much as 4-5% of the outstanding stock, each day for 2 weeks.  It drove the price up by 50%, then the fund stopped buying.
