Glencore boss warns Western OEMs to
Secure Cobalt Supplies

Dear Stakeholder,

We wanted to share an article originally from the Financial Times about a warning that Glencore CEO Ivan Glasenberg delivered to U.S. and European automakers on future cobalt supplies. At the FT Future of the Car Summit, the world’s largest cobalt miner (and one of the future feed providers to the First Cobalt Refinery) said that western EV manufacturers risk being left behind by their Chinese rivals unless they secure supplies of cobalt, which could include direct investments in the supply chain.

First Cobalt will soon be the only producer of refined cobalt in North America and the second largest refiner globally outside China. Our growing Idaho cobalt-copper deposit could also provide a long term, domestic source of battery materials in North America. Add to that our leading ESG credentials and we believe that we can play an important role in diversifying the supply chain.

Kind regards,

Trent Mell
President and CEO
