The following is excerpted from a long and interesting speech from the Head of Civil Aerospace for Rolls Royce. The main thrust of the speech was to reacquaint the listeners with the majesty of flight, how far we've come, and how the travelling public have been allowed to mislay the wonder and majesty of flight and take modern technical achievements so much for granted.
''The average passenger is probably unaware that while they sit watching their movie, our engineers are watching the engines on the aircraft 24/7, every day, every flight. Aircraft in flight anywhwere in the world automatically report back via satellite to the Rolls Royce Service Operations Room where our team looks at, compares and reports on half a billion engine data reports every year. The data is analysed, trends extrapolated, anomolies detected and, often unknown to the pilot, preparations are made at the arrival airport to take remedial action and send the aircraft on its next leg with no delays''
He also laid out some rather impressive values as to the improved fuel efficiency of modern engines and their maintenance reliabilty....the fuel efficiency alone has improved at an average 1% per annum over the last 20 years....which has translated into incredible savings to the industry.
