5 December,2022

Santo Domingo.- The president of the Round Table of the Commonwealth Countries of the Dominican Republic, Fernando Gonzlez Nicols, expressed his support for the Dominican State allowing the environmental studies of the Romero mining project in San Juan de la Maguana to be carried out
, as required by law.

He said that the mining law 146-71 and the environmental law 64-00, provide for environmental and social studies to be carried out, in order to guarantee that a possible mining exploitation does not affect the water or the fauna of that province.

Gonzlez Nicolas pointed out that the 1,500 investors in the Romero project come from Commonwealth countries, such as Canada and Great Britain, and that they have invested 44 million dollars in mining exploration in San Juan de la Maguana.

"They have done this in compliance with Dominican laws, they found gold and hope they will be allowed to carry out the environmental impact study to confirm whether or not they can continue with the development of the project," said the president of the Commonwealth Board.
He expressed that the State approving the studies would be strengthening the good image that the Dominican Republic has been gaining as an attractive destination for foreign investment. “The progress that the Luis Abinader administration has made is very important, streamlining bureaucratic processes, increasing transparency and respecting legal certainty.”

The president of the Board of the Commonwealth added that past confusions around the Romero project have not allowed its normal progress, and that, however, recent clarifications and precisions are allowing the community of San Juan to better understand the situation.

He stated that supporting compliance with the law will guarantee that a possible mining exploitation does not affect the water or the fauna of San Juan.

The Commonwealth countries as a whole are currently the main foreign investors in the Dominican Republic and one of the most important destinations for national exports.
