I personally think it's simply buyers being patient in the open market in the knowledge that some investor will be willing to sell to take quick profits. So many people sell half their holding when they double, or other likewise strategies, that cap a rise in the very short term. In my experience, many investors find it much harder to keep a paper profit than a paper loss, therefore some selling on any significant rise.
