Norwegian Green production of silicon is just around the corner
less energy needed
no co2 produced
aluminium slag used instead of coal
Quartz is the raw material in both the traditional smelting process and using the SisAl method. With today’s technology, CO2 is formed when quartz reacts with carbon. Instead of carbon, the SisAl process uses aluminium as a reducing agent, thus avoiding the formation of CO2
The SisAl process is exothermic, meaning the reaction between quartz and aluminium releases energy. Today’s method is endothermic, and energy needs to be added to reduce the quartz. SisAl uses only one third the energy consumption per tonne of finished silicon.
