I don't fully understand this 'buy in' thing and why the sales don't go to market. any help to put this into simple terms would be much appreciated.

Short coverings having a hard time finding the shares needed are found elsewhere and bought a premium - similar to cross trades. I'm not knowledgable in this area though so if someone knows more feel free. Personally I think it's bullsh*t. If a trade is done it should be done at market.
