Great... consensus?

Means absolutely nothing. Here is what he said: "Barrick Gold’s (TSX:ABX)(NYSE:GOLD) chief executive Mark Bristow says he is searching for more gold and copper assets to add to the company’s portfolio, but not necessarily through takeovers." Note the "not necessarily"-he could go either way.

Not so sure when they speak of take over they are referring to companies like Lme. When you are that much bigger not sure a junior would qualify as takeover, simple buyout would be term in my guess. I am no expert for sure, and recently been know to be wrong more often than right.

I think the two terms are generally synonymous.

But right after it says.  "open to merger and acquisitions (M&A) opportunities, Bristow told Financial Times, but thinks that recent takeover deals in the gold-mining sector have been “over the top”." Makes a distiction in the article between the two

No, I don't think that he is making any distinction between the two. A "takeover" is the same as an "acquisition".  I think that he is trying to say that he thinks that in some recent ones, purchaser overpaid, and, presumably, he is not willing to do that. BTW-this is all old news and not really worthy of any focus.
Comment by LaurionLong on May 09, 2023 10:31am
This is good news for juniors universally.  Bristow is saying that big gold buying slightly less big gold is too expensive and the better strategy is to grow organically and that ONLY means acquisition of much smaller corps.   LME has never been in better position.
Comment by matlas on May 09, 2023 10:48am
I am not sure I would necessarily glean that from the article, but your comments dovetail with reports of statements that he made months ago that they were going to be focusing on the juniors as acquiisition targets.

Barrick Gold’s Mark Bristow is on the hunt for takeovers as rival Newmont tries to push through a mega-deal, forecasting a market rally in his company’s two key commodities. The pugnacious chief executive of the world’s second-largest gold mining group expects gold and copper prices to rise, lifting mining stocks. His comments mark a step up in the serial dealmaker’s M&A rhetoric after playing ...more
