RE:Moringa redux...........

RE:Moringa redux...........Yeah I know posting about the addition of a product that sells for $9.99 retail to the Nateralife website may seem like a waste of time, effort and space – that’s fine – use, flush or ignore.

So we don’t hear much about P0S-BPC Manufacturing Corp. as P0S Biosciences operates the facility and NSP’s 51% share of operations gets lumped into the Consolidated Financial Statements.   The article in my previous post indicated that Kuli Kuli’s moringa supplier SFA was a consulting client of P0S Biosciences so maybe a small amount of business went through P0S-BPC or maybe none.

Kuli Kuli started out with the Moringa Green Energy drink and has expanded by adding the Moringa Energy Bar.  NSP versions of both of these products are possible future additions to the Natera retail line with or without the addition of HempOmega™ and as regulations change CBD’s could be added.

NATERA® Ingredients could become a supplier to any company currently making any of the mentioned items.

One of the benefits of having a business partner like P0S Biosciences is that they are in tune with trends in our industry that will eventually turn into opportunities for NSP.

The April 11th news release (Note 1) updated us on developments with HempOmega™.  The following was part of that news release…

HempOmega™ Beverages - With the cooperation of Dr. Rick Green, VP of Technology at P0S Biosciences, NSE was able to fortify a juice beverage with HempOmega™ that delivered a plant based omega formulation solution for the beverage industry. The process incorporated encapsulated materials to inhibit oil oxidation while providing your daily dose of omega nutrition.

So if I understand it correctly HempOmega™ could successfully be added to Kuli Kuli’s Moringa Green Energy drink, any similar product or any juice product.  It seems to me that the science geeks (meant in a positive way) are aware of the trends – see articles below.

I hate the phrase “lots going on behind the scenes”, however, IMO there are things happening that we do not know about that actually fit into the “…..Strategic Business Plan to capitalize on the multiple opportunities in front of Naturally Splendid. The Strategic Business Plan focuses on a number of key opportunities including: export; existing retail product lines and product line extensions; capitalizing on our technologies including HempOmega™ and CBD; maximizing our opportunities at our P0S Bio-Processing Centre; as well as developing new revenue streams through the packaging line from Eat Real Snack Foods….”(Note 2).

I look forward to the news releases as they develop.

Hybrid drinks may juice up a declining sector - April 13, 2017

Dive Brief:

  • A new Mintel study found that more consumers are looking for functional beverages, and 49% demand vitamins and minerals in their ideal hybrid drink.
  • Among the popular hybrid drinks are bottled water with added health benefits like protein, vitamins and antioxidants (44%); carbonated juice (40%); and juices with added functional benefits (35%).
  • Dollar sales of 100% juice, juice drinks and smoothies have only increased 1.2% in 2016. Some say hybrid drinks could revive the juice category, as consumers are more interested in juice-based drinks (47%) than ones using water, tea or coffee as a base

Dive Insight:

Analysts have been touting the rise of functional beverages as more consumers seek ways to get their nutrition on the go. Many industry players believe innovation in this category could help juice — historically one of the biggest non-alcoholic U.S. beverage markets — reverse its trending decline.

Several juice brands are already offering high levels of vitamins, minerals and other probiotics in their products, and juice manufacturers have also invested in creative innovations that blend beverage flavor with functionality. These reformulations have helped draw consumers back to the juice aisle and give the category a fresh reputation, despite general concerns over sugar levels.
Sales of juice drinks and smoothies increased 1.2% in 2016, and just 4% since 2011, according to Mintel’s research.

Still, the trend is driving people towards juice — a revival that is is likely the result of pressed juice bars and smoothie chains, which are popular among millennials.

Do Soda Taxes Really Work? - Apr 18, 2017

In 2014, Berkeley, California became the first city in the United States to pass a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages. The goal was to cut back on consumption—and eventually, to help chip away at rates of diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The tax, which tacks on one cent per fluid ounce on beverages with added caloric sweeteners—like sodas, energy drinks and sweetened fruit drinks—was officially implemented in March 2015. And according to a new report published Tuesday in the journal PLOS Medicine, it appears to be working.

The researchers looked at whether the tax impacted the buying behaviors of Berkeley residents. They found that one year after the tax took effect, sales of sugar-sweetened drinks fell by close to 10%, and sales of water increased in Berkeley by about 16%.  Sales of unsweetened teas, milk and fruit juices also went up, suggesting people were substituting their sugary drinks with healthier alternatives.

“I was really quite surprised, to be honest,” says lead study author Barry Popkin of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. “Berkeley already consumes [fewer sugary drinks] than the rest of America. They are highly educated and higher income. We wondered, if money is not a problem, would they stop?”

The findings suggest that even in higher-income communities, a soda tax can impact sales. Popkin predicts that the drops would be even greater in cities and counties with lower-income communities. In Mexico, which passed a similar tax that took effect in 2014, there have been significant declines in the consumption of sugary beverages. Among low-income residents, it dropped by 17% early on.
This strategy may be gaining traction in the U.S. During the 2016 election, four cities and one U.S. county—including San Francisco and Cook County, Illinois—voted in favor of raising the price of sugar-sweetened beverages. Philadelphia also passed a similar soda tax in June of 2016. “I expect larger effects in those cities,” says Popkin.  …..

Connecticut is latest state to consider soda tax - April 19, 2017

Dive Insight:
Connecticut lawmakers are taking a page from cities such as Philadelphia and Berkeley, Calif., which already collect taxes on soda and other “unhealthy” beverages. In places were taxes are being collected, soda sales have been found to dwindle. While the tax seems to be molding consumer behavior, many working in the soft drink and grocery industries have suffered from fewer sales.

Sales of soda in Philadelphia dropped more than 50% in some stores this year, and that has led to layoffs at soda companies, distribution centers and other businesses directly involved.
Supporters of these taxes argue that the benefits not only help the state generate major revenue, but also encouraged people to choose healthier beverage options.

Connecticut is one of several jurisdictions considering a soda tax in the future. Seattle and Santa Fe are also thinking about it. Until the tax passed in Berkeley, no soda taxed had been imposed. Success in the cities who started taxing the drinks earlier may have inspired the other potential taxes.

Soda already was facing a downward sales trend, having been surpassed in sales last year by bottled water. Taxes like these will only hurt sales in the future.
