I guess this is in the odds and sods column. When I was very young I remember spending time at the beach in Virginiatown. It was actually quite a beautiful beach with a nice sandy bottom. Years later I went back and there was no beach. It had silted in with a substance that looked suspiciously like tailings. And to add insult to injury this formerly beautiful beach had become a dump for various forms of waste. I wondered about this for years. How did this disaster come about? A couple of days ago I was reading the 43-101 for Golden Candle. In this 43-101 they mention that Chesterville Mines (beside Kerr Addison and now part of Golden Candle's property) dumped their tailings into the northeast arm of Larder Lake for many years and this was uncontained in any way. So at least part of the mystery is solved. The other part was how this could be approved or even if approval was needed back in the old days.
