This is part of the Live Free or Die mentality (more accurately in the circumstances Live Free and Die). Many Americans do not want to be told what to do, even if it is killing them (guns, vaccines, social distancing). These are choices a society makes. Nobody should be surprised that crowded beaches, bars and social gatherings (including protests against health measures!!) result in exploding new infection numbers.
