Back in 1956 at the ripe old age of 16 I had to quit school and become the bread winner for the family. I got a job working out of town on heavy construction and spent the next 7 years doing that. Those guys I worked with were about as far away as you could get from "Woke" and it was a terrific introduction to the realities of life for a young person. As good, and probably better, than the formal education that I missed out on. Had to get that at night school later on. I always felt the world would be a better place if all young guys could get that experience after getting out of school -- but that doesn't happen to most. An oil field experience would be similar or logging. Gives you a lot more appreciation for what you have - you worked for it. Less of this silver spoon stuff, that so many seem to have these days, would be better.

Pandora, liked your last. like you and others I've seen both sides of the coin. Back in the day, '52 to '56 was a very young sailor in the Royal Navy having no parents in the country and the pittance that was paid to us in those days couldn't afford to take annual leave unless you worked. Used to go up to London and get a job as a dishwasher in the "SAVOY HOTEL". Paid  every evening, enogh for a couple of pints. Ah! Those were the days,  ;-)
