Locally Produced Magnesium to Establish 100 New Jobs
By Hanne Hammernes | November 27, 2013
“We want to establish stable, safe and valued jobs for the local community,” said Chairman and
CEO of Nevada Clean Magnesium, Inc. (NVM), Edward Lee, in a press conference in Glomfjord.
Lee was referring to the planned magnesium plant to be run by ScanMag AS (SMA) in the
former SIC -Processing plant in the Glomfjord industrial park. He emphasized that NVM has
agreed to this project because of the Company’s great faith in the abilities of magnesium
production with the technology available. At this point, it is now possible to have profitable
operations in competition with China, that has dominated the market for the past 20 years. In
addition to China, there is only one factory in Brazil that produces magnesium for their own use.
Local Production
“With the establishment of the factory in Glomfjord, we will use dolomite from Granasen in
Mosjoen and the firm, Normin Mine AS, which will ensure a very short distance to transport the
raw material, which will be a big advantage,” said Finn Nordmo, Senior Advisor at Meloy
Industrial Development AS and board member at SMA. “We have been working on this since
2012, and feel that we have a project that is viable. Considering the versatility magnesium,
including in the aluminum industry in Norway, Europe and the United States, we have great
From
faith that the market is ready for us. We will work in conjunction with contacts we have made in
the industry over many years to develop the next phase,” said Nordmo.
“A focus on dolomite and magnesium production is keeping with government and county
council members' wishes. I, therefore, expect the authorities are prepared to approve,” said
Lother Maruhnm, General Manager of MNU and Chairman of SMA.
New Technology
Nevada Clean has, like ScanMag, a plan to produce and distribute high grade magnesium at a
low cost to U.S. and European markets. We have developed our technologies in collaboration
with Vulcan Technologies, and we believe that this will allow us to compete with China, who
uses much older and less environmentally-friendly process. The time has come for us to
develop magnesium with this new technology, which originated from Italy, in full scale.
“We want to cooperate with Norway. We will be counting on eachother for skills and
knowledge. Where we possess knowledge of the technology, Scan Mag possess market,
industry and administrative skills and knowledge,” said Lee. To meet with ScanMag in Norway,
Lee brought with him Director of Nevada Clean Magnesium, James Sever, and Donald D'arcy -
Evans and Rodney Gander from Vulcan Technologies joined them. The latter two have
previously experienced mining in Finnmark and collaborated with Elkem, in addition to Jan Erik
Nilskog and Frank Holvik from Normin Mine AS. The team has worked on this project full time
since last September and have great faith in its success.
Starting in 2015
“Our goal is to launch in 2015,” says Lothar Maruhn. We have the most of malitetene of the box
bathe when it comes to mining in Mosjoen and they know what t takes to establish a factory
here in Glomfjord. Our cooperation with NVM gives us the knowledge and technology we need.
All that remains is to fully fund the project and then we can begin. Scan Mag AS is owned by
Meloy Business Development and Norman Mine. The goal is that over course of two or three
years to have created a total of 100 jobs, in addition to mining in Mosjoen with around 50
jobs,” said Finn Nordmo. “ In addition to new jobs, the project will increase the total value
added in Norway, also giving more support to local suppliers.”
After the factory in Glomfjord is established, the plan is to build a factory in the United States.
