VLT.v Unveils Plans for Demonstration Plant The global lithium sector, at the forefront of clean energy innovation, is poised for an extraordinary journey. As the world embraces the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable energy, lithium plays a pivotal role in realizing these goals, and production will need to greatly increase to keep up with growing demand.
Volt Lithium Corp. (Ticker VLT or VLTLF for US investors) is developing techniques to produce lithium from an abundant but previously inaccessible source: oilfield brines.
VLT utilizes a unique extraction method consisting of two critical stages: brine purification and its innovative IES-300 Direct Lithium Extraction Technology. This method effectively removes 99% of impurities from lithium-enriched oilfield brine and reclaims up to 93% of the lithium content.
To demonstrate the effectiveness of its DLE extraction method beyond bench testing, VLT successfully conducted pilot production plant operations for its flagship Rainbow Lake Lithium Project during spring 2023, marking a crucial step toward commercial extraction goals.
The pilot showed that VLT's unique 2-step Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) process can deliver high lithium yields from low-concentration oilfield brines at low costs.
Specifically, VLT achieved a 90% lithium recovery rate from brines with concentrations as low as 34 milligrams per liter. With projected operating costs expected to remain under CAD$4,000 per tonne at a concentration of 120 mg/L, this promises to yield strong economic results.
With this, VLT is preparing a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for the Rainbow Lake Project. The company is finalizing capital and operating costs for a 20,000-tonne-per-annum lithium plant, set for publication before the end of November.
VLT also announced yesterday that it has commissioned a permanent Demonstration Plant for its DEL technology, to be built in Calgary, Alberta. This facility allows real-time testing of oilfield brines from various North American basins, not just VLT's Rainbow Lake Project.
This innovation incorporates insights from the pilot phase and VLT's collaborations with Zeng Lab and the Advanced Water Treatment Lab at the University of Alberta.
