VLT Expands DLE Capabilities Across North America
Confirming a continued acceleration of their business strategy, centred on achieving commercial extraction of lithium from oilfield brines across North America, Volt Lithium (VLT.v VLTLF) released an operational update today.
Building on the pilot plant operations for VLT's flagship Rainbow Lake Lithium Project, VLT commissioned its permanent Demonstration Plant which is capable of testing oilfield brines from multiple basins across North America in real time.
Incorporating technology improvements over the proven Pilot Plant for the Rainbow Lake Brine, the plant opens up a cast market opportunity to process oilfield brines from any basin across North America.
This effectively enables VLT to use its proprietary Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology to extract lithium regardless of the brine's original lithium concentrations.
Engineered to extract lithium from oilfield brines, VLT's DLE technology boasts an impressive lithium recovery rate of 90% from concentrations as low as 34 mg/L while maintaining commercial viability. Most notably, however, VLT's tech can achieve 97% recoveries using 120mg/L concentrations.
Commissioning of the Permanent Demonstration Plant
VLT's ability to extract lithium from oilfield brines produced across North America is one of the most important outcomes from the previously announced collaborations with Zend Lab and the Advanced Water Treatment Lab.
Serving as VLT's anchor facility for processing brines, the plant simulates field conditions for extracting lithium from oilfield brines and converting it into lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonates.
With this, VLT has been able to successfully remove contaminants from the oilfield brine being used for its proprietary DLE technology which is a critical step in the DLE process.
Rainbow Lake & Preliminary Economic Assessment Preparation
With the reservoir analysis now complete, VLT is finalizing the capital and operating costs required for the establishment of a 20,000-tonne-per-annum lithium plant at Rainbow Lake.
Showcasing a substantial lithium resource of 4.3 million tonnes with concentrations reaching up to 121mg/L, VLT is aiming to publish the Rainbow Lake PEA before the end of November 2023.
In offering a compelling opportunity to oil and gas operators by providing a win-win situation by adding value to existing oilfield operations, VLT is on track to become a leading player in the DLE sector.
