Although First Nickel increased production at its Lockerby nickel mine in the Sudbury Basin by 70% year over year in Q2F07, the mine still has additional upside. Yesterday, the company released results from 12 additional infill holes testing the Lockerby Depth zone. Highlights of this round of assays include: 1.8% nickel and 1.39% copper over 53 metres and 2.9% nickel and 1.84% copper over 35.7 metres. While these results indicated that the zone is thicker between the 67 and 71 levels than previously thought, a step-out hole returned 1.37% nickel and 0.88% copper over 111 metres, indicating that the overall deposit may be larger than previously anticipated. A second drill rig is to be added next month to accelerate exploration in the area.
