SatCon will work with Electrovaya on a complete electric power conversion package.
Boston's SatCon Technology (Nasdaq: SATC) announced today it received a $2 million contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory to develop an advanced hybrid electric powertrain.
The company will be teamed up with Mississauga, Ontario-based Electrovaya, which will make the battery, to develop the complete electric power conversion package for a hybrid electric vehicle.
The vehicle is expected to be used for special operations applications.
"The technology developed as a result of this effort has dual-use attributes that can be quickly transitioned to commercial and consumer hybrid electric vehicle applications," said David Eisenhaure, president and CEO of SatCon.
"We also look forward to the opportunity to partner with vehicle OEMs to transition this electric power conversion technology to fielded vehicles," he said.
SatCon said the hybrid powertrain system will include a permanent magnet traction motor/generator, and a DC/AC drive system, a battery to distribution bus DC/DC bi-directional converter to provide regulated high voltage power, and an auxiliary power converter for on-board and on-station electrical loads.
The company said the contract runs through December 2008.
SatCon also announced an Air Force contract in May. Under that agreement, SatCon will develop a high speed, power dense generator for airborne applications in the range of 100 to 300 kilowatts, scalable to the megawatt class for directed energy weapon power supplies.
