$12 million to be spent to sink shaft
Shore Gold and Newmont Mining will spend $12 million to sink a shaft for underground bulk sampling of the Orion South kimberlite in the Fort a la Corne area.
It is estimated that about 5,000 tonnes of kimberlite will be recovered from the shaft alone, prior to the development of lateral drifts. It is expected that drilling will have penetrated the overburden and reached the kimberlite, 210 metres below ground level, by January, 2008.
The aim is to recover substantial, representative diamond parcels from each of the Orion South kimberlite lithologies for diamond grade and price determinations.
The evaluation of the Orion kimberlite cluster, with a budget of about $66.5 million for the period October, 2006 to December, 2007, is now the largest work program outlined for any of the Fort a la Corne kimberlites, the companies said in a press release.
