hey arisetech i understand what you mean,

I dont' get how the price of a buck was determined in the first place?  was it a bid that was simply a buck (someone trying to buy no matter what?)
cuz i figure it would open at my my ask since it was lower than the buck and so why would anyone pay more than they have to for shares as my shares were available for .99.   so it's like someone over paid my asking price.. which doesn't really happen anywhere in my known world.  (like who offered 350K for a house when someone's asking 300K?)

I always thought that trades were between 2 people and the last price shown is the price of the last trade, but it appears  i'm under-educated :P

opening price determined by bid/ask
1st dibs to market buys and sells...they go regardless
2nd is limited bid and limit ask and they go in 1st come 1st serve....all is visible in level 2

so yesterday your .99 got moved to a buck because volume of market buys and limit buys at a buck

using your house example...in the old hot Calgary housing market houses were all going above asking price

supply and demand also works in stock market

hope this helps
