DIOS DISCOVERS A NEW CARBONATITE COMPLEX WITH NIOBIUM AND TANTALUM POTENTIAL AT SHIPSHAW, QUEBEC
Theexploration team of Dios Exploration Inc. has discovered the Shipshawcarbonatite complex, Saguenay, Que., with niobium, tantalum and rareearth potential as well as strontium, barytine and even carbonatepotential as a commodity by itself. The discovery was made by drilltesting a magnetic anomaly targeting a carbonatite for strategic metals(niobium, tantalum) and rare earths, located a few kilometres away fromthe 30-year-old operating Iamgold's Niobec niobium mine located inSt-Honore, Que., Canada.
So far, one diamond drill hole to date on the target reached avertical depth of 190 metres and already 70 per cent of carbonatitematerial including a continuous 40 metres of length of homogeneouswhite carbonatite has been intercepted. The following geophysicalmodelling interpretation for a carbonatite target by an independentgeophysics specialist suggested a subvertical intrusive with at leasttwo kilometres diameter, located at a depth of 275 to 325 metres underthe surface.
The company's core data to date indicate the occurrence ofwhite magnesian carbonatite rocks within ankerite (iron carbonate)altered rocks very similar in appearance to the Niobec mine ore core.Centimetre-size fractures filled with well-formed barytine crystals canalso be observed, as at Niobec. A small portable XRF (X-rayfluorescence) measurement instrument returned qualitative readings fromthe core in niobium, tantalum, strontium, baryum, meaning suchcommodities, for instance, are to be found within the complex. Thewhole core is currently being sawed in two equal parts with one-half tobe sent for quantitative whole rock assaying. Drilling in thecarbonatite complex is being pursued to reach the modelled largeintrusive at depth. Systematic drilling of the intrusive is planned.
The Shipshaw carbonatite complex is related to the SaguenayRift zone and a fault zone related to the Shipshaw River, discoveredthrough testing an ancient topographic parallel bedrock low.
The company's geologists are of the opinion that the Shipshawcarbonatite complex was never discovered before due to thickoverburden. In addition to carbonatite rocks, alkaline syenites as wellas cover of Trenton-type calcareous rocks have been intersected throughdrilling on the company's property. These rock types are also beingobserved in association with the Niobec mine. The Niobec niobium minewas discovered in the late sixties by Soquem which conductedgeophysical (magnetic and spectrometric) surveys at the time, whichsurveys did not cover the actual Shipshaw property of Dios. The Niobecmine central ore-bearing carbonatite is hosted within a syeniteintrusive series covered by Trenton limestones. The Dios Shipshawproperty itself is road accessible and located near various facilities.Dios is now holding a 60-per-cent interest in the property and can earnan additional 20-per-cent interest from two prospectors by incurring afurther $300 000 in exploration expenditures.
Carbonatite intrusives are alkaline rock types of particularinterest for different commodities such as strategic metals (niobium, tantalum), rare earths and many others. Niobium is used in the makingof specific alloys used in the aerospace industry, for instance.
