"Not all new mine developments in the US this year will be underground; one operator is getting its footing in Kentucky as it readies for the development of a highwall.
North American Gem, with seven leases totaling about 5000 acres, will put a highwall miner to work at its No. 2 operation in the Spring.
While it is initially permitted to extract from the Jellico seam, it will later pull from others, including the rich Blue Gem seam. The potential operator, which had not been chosen at press time, will be pulling from a 42-52inch seam height. Final production numbers are still pending, but the company expects its budget to be about 1000t per shift, or 20,000t monthly (at one shift), and eventually 40,000t monthly based on a two-shift schedule with a 20-day work month and 2 dedicated maintenance days"
