Beaverdam Creek Thorold PCB Clean-upI recently read a new release on the clean-up of 6000 cu. m. (12,000 tonnes) of PCB contaminated sediments in Beaverdam Creek, Thorold near St. Catharines, Ontario. The property is owned by Georgia Pacific. The project will continue for the rest of this year. I sent an e-mail to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment offical on this project on the destination of the material and received the following response:
"Thank you for your email of July 27, 2010 regarding the clean up of contaminated sediments in Beaverdams Creek in Thorold , Ontario .
The sediment material removed from the creek is sampled and analyzed at a laboratory. .....material with greater than 45 parts per million will be shipped to the Bennett destruction facility in Quebec . ....You are correct in stating that PCBs bioaccumulate in the environment and the important environmental outcome of this project is the removal of a significant source of PCBs to our natural environment."
