On May 26,
Google announced that it will be shutting down its Translate APIas of the end of 2011. The Translate API is software that allowswebsites and software programs to interact programatically with GoogleTranslate. In the simplest terms, the Translate API allowed companies todevelop products which dispensed free translations by courtesy ofGoogle.
Since the Translate API was released a few years ago, hundreds ofcompanies developed software products around the free translations thatGoogle provided. One of these products is
Ortsbo.When a user asks for a translation in Ortsbo, the request is sent toGoogle servers which then send the translation back to Ortsbo.
The widespread use of the free translations exacted a heavy financialtoll on Google. So much so, that Google decided to shut down theservice and end the free ride. All of the hundreds of companies thathitchhiked on Google’s generosity will have some decisions to make. Theycan either seek alternative translation options, or abandon theirproduct. The problems with seeking alternative translation options arethat:
Fewer languages: Google leads the field with over 50 languages; other machine translations support much fewer languages.
Translation quality: Google arguably has the best quality among machine translation systems.
Cost: alternative translation solutions areunlikely to be free. And switching translation suppliers will also leadto extra product development costs. Indeed, I anticipate that many ofthe free products which are based around free
Google translations will cease to exist.
What will Ortsbo do? Now that Google is shutting down, whichtranslation system will they use? How much money will they need to spendto switch? How will it impact their business model? These are questionswhich INT stockholders should be asking.

you’d better pull this or you’ll end up getting sued… that’s notOrtsbo, its Transl8tor… click the link on the Silverlight version ofOrtsbo.com labeled Transl8tor and you will see what I mean… i stronglysuggest for your own protection that you pull this… you have to becareful who you listen to…
Ortsbo is the real time translation tool that you connect to variousmessengers with… its proprietary technology, not Google’s… Ortsboshouldn’t have mixed the translator on the side with the same site…anyway, think about it… that’s not live translation… Ortsbo is real timetranslation in a chat session, not a press a button to get atranslation and then email it… how do you think the O4O plugin forMicrosoft Outlook will work on your PC? Using Google API? COME OFF IT…
Last warning… pull this article or the company will most definitely be coming after you for libel

What a poor hack job…Ortsbo is one of Google’s directcompetitors, and offers Real Time Chat Translation across multipleplatforms simultaneously. Beyond Googles translation capacity right now,and apparently yours.

well, its not libel, my mistake… but its definitely not thefacts… you should refer to David’s comments at the Ortsbo Facebook pagefor confirmation of this comment back from the CEO to me personallyafter I posted my comment above and then advised him of your post… youreally need to state the facts:

Put your comments up on the GTS blog board – the writer nevercontacted us for comment – funny how they can write without the purefacts. This Google announcement does not affect Ortsbo.

the stockholders have asked the company, and I’m one of them…you are mistaken… that’s not Ortsbo, it Transl8tor… have you bothered tocontact the company or even try Ortsbo? … you’ve been misled, probablyby someone at StockHouse … no surprise … so are you bashing the companyat StockHouse as well???

Hey Johnny, John or whatever your name is. Why don’t you back upyour comments and warnings with some facts. Ortsbo is being billed as atranslation tool. Who is doing the real-time translation? Do youpersist in saying that the translations are not done by Google TranslateAPI? Then prove it! And tell us how the real-time translations arebeing done. The only tool that supports over 50 languages is Google. Iam curious to hear how Ortsbo is managing over 50 languages withoutGoogle’s API.
BTW I am trying to use Ortsbo now at

Hey John, Anyone with a thousand dollars can issue apress-release. I read the last press-release over and it sounds like BSto me. I may be wrong–why don’t you get the folks at Ortsbo to providesome concrete technical information and not just promises of greatthings to come. How will they get the 80+ languages? Are they developingtheir own machine translation? If it will be done using crowdsourcing,how will it be real time?
All this company does is issue one press-release after another. In mypersonal opinion, anyone who buys INT stock because of the value ofOrtsbo is making a mistake. Better to give the money to charity.

That Ortsbo thing is just a scam. You can’t even find how tolaunch their so called app from the website and it doesn’t even work.
It’s just unbelievable that there are such a thing in Canada.

Me and my girlfriend just tried it out, and it works great i had anHindu colleague veriy the hindi and worked perfect as well… this companyis also ligit as they work out of an office in Richmond Hill and anyonecan stop by who is concerned… Dave your not much of a man either forbashing as a journalist…. your not better then globe and mail… BTW i didsee that error under my name but it still worked… you probably justassumed since you dont have any friends on your msn or gtalk list… ciao!

Let’s set the record straight: I am not a journalist by any means. Iown a translation company which develops translation automationsoftware. As such, I am quite knowledgable about this field. I am notany kind of basher nor do I own any shares of INT. Which is a good thingbecause the stock has dropped about 20% in one week.
As a translation software professional, I find the claims made byOrtsbo hard to believe. How do they get 80 languages in real time? Whoprovides them with the machine translation, if it is not through GoogleAPI? Who is their chief computational linguist in charge of translationsoftware development? What’s his name? In this field everybody knowseverybody, so just mentioning that person’s name would lend credence toOrtsbo’s claims. Gene Simmons from KISS? That’s a joke, he may know howto play guitar and stick out his tongue but what value does he bringbesides serving as a PR gimmick?
Instead of answering these questions and assuring the investors, theyjust pump out one press-release after another. And the press-releasesdon’t reveal anything. Take the latest one: Microsoft Azure, what isthat? It’s a hosting package that anyone can sign up to. Like the oneoffered by Amazon. How the f**k is that a technical breakthrough? Thething just sounds so fishy. And instead of getting a bunch of anonymousbozos–like yourself–to write comments, why doesn’t Ortsbo just publishsome information that’s of value and which is believable. I’ll be thefirst translation industry blogger to lavish praise on Ortsbo if I feelthat it is merited.
