recent news from Kyrgyzstan

recent news from Kyrgyzstan

For the past week there were a few comments posted on various websites in Kyrgyzstan that government geological committee is set to illegally extend license to Stans. Originally govt committee was asking for a 49% stake but after negotiations the parties settled on a joint venture and govt stake valued at 20%. The author of those posting claims that the difference b/n original 49% and finalized 20% will be paid in cash to decision makers (bribes). I am pretty sure those comments sparked journalists inquiries. All the State Secretary Officer tried to do in his response was to defend that there were no plans to illegally (read for bribes) extend Stan’s license. What is curious though was official’s comment that Stan’s extension hadn’t been reviewed yet. This contradicts the fact that for a few hours there were minutes of the meeting posted on the geological committee website. Go figure but this what you have to deal with in pretty much any developing country. I don’t think the sell off is justified. Someone is probably trying to make it a big deal out of it to get shares lower in order to acquire more. Could that be some Kyrgyz officials or their relatives – quite conceivable. Anyway, it is quite obvious that so far it has been a rough road for Stans since the new government came in. We might benefit from a joint venture with it. I just hope it really happens now and there are no more delays. Just my opinion so no need to come after me.
