Nolan Watson

From whiz kid prodigy to youthful CFO - that's the Nolan Watson story. With successful companies and extensive charity work on his résumé, it's no wonder he was voted "Most Motivated" by CFA Magazine.

Talk about the fast track. Nolan is one of the smartest, most driven young men you'll ever meet.

And we do mean young. Then barely able to legally drink, he took his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia to Deloitte and Touche in 2001. He soon moved into the firm's corporate finance department, performing business valuations and merger and acquisition support services. Then, with that experience under his belt, he left the company to join Silver Wheaton Corp. (T.SLW, NYSE: SLW) as a controller and their first employee.

Within a year, he was promoted to chief financial officer, becoming the youngest-ever CFO of an NYSE-listed company at 26. Two years later, Nolan was part of the team that raised over C$1 billion in debt and equity for acquisition purposes for Silver Wheaton. With him at the helm – and under the tutelage of business legend Ian Telfer, the founder of Silver Wheaton and Gold Wheaton Corp. – SLW's market capitalization grew from C$300 million to C$3 billion.

No wonder Nolan was recognized as one of the "Most Motivated" CFAs in the world by CFA Magazine in 2008. He's won numerous other awards from professional and charitable institutions, including the Valedictorian of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia. Passionate about community development, he's also somehow found time, as founder and president of Nations Cry, to oversee the construction of schools for orphans in Sierra Leone, Africa.

Nolan left Silver Wheaton in 2008 to become president and CEO of Sandstorm Resources (V.SSL) because he wanted to build another company from the ground up. The company is looking to build a metal-streaming business modeled after Silver Wheaton, but in metals other than silver. And it looks like Nolan's still got the magic touch. In April 2009 alone, he raised C$47 million for Sandstorm Resources, and the company's share price has nearly quadrupled over the past two years.

MOST DRIVEN
Nolan Watson, CFA

At Silver Wheaton, the Vancouver-based silver mining company, Nolan
Watson, CFA, has seen it all. That's partly because Watson, who joined
the company as controller in 2005, was its first full-time employee in
2006. At age 26, he became the youngest CFO of a NYSE-listed company.
Silver Wheaton was spun off from Wheaton River Minerals in 2004. "So, even
though it was new, there were substantial assets in the company," says Watson.
"They had a market cap on day one of more than $300 million. We were actually
in the office of Wheaton River Minerals, so I was the only employee but I was able
to leverage off their existing systems. I didn't have to process accounts payable
or anything like that."
Since then, the company has grown its market cap to more than $3 billion,
helped largely by acquisitions that Watson has worked to finance. This past April,
Watson arranged to raise $485 million in debt to help the company acquire
25 percent of the silver production from Goldcorp's Peñasquito mine in Mexico.
As CFO, says Watson, it helps to be tenacious. "If something needs to get
done," he says, "I make sure it gets done, period—no excuses. A lot of people
think patience is a good quality, but I would describe myself as a relatively impatient
person. I think that helps in making sure mistakes don't happen."
"We have an incredibly acquisitions-focused management team," Watson says,
"so ensuring that there is money for those acquisitions is something that I spend
a good amount of time on." Typically, Watson spends 40 percent of his time obtaining
finances and the remainder searching for possible acquisitions.
