T E C H N O L O G Y....G L O S S A R Y .. https://www.qualcomm.com/cda/technology/glossary/0,1591,,00.html TECHNOLOGY GLOSSARY Analog The original cellular phone technology still in use today. It allows only one subscriber to use a channel at a time. ASICs Application Specific Integrated Circuits. ASIC chips are the heart of the technology used in wireless phones and infrastructure as well as direct broadcast satellite (DBS) systems, very small aperture terminals (VSATs), radar systems, digital and mobile radios, synthesizers, voice storage systems, security systems and instrumentation. CDMA Code Division Multiple Access. A digital technology pioneered by QUALCOMM that provides crystal clear voice quality in an exciting new generation of wireless communications products and services. Using digital encoding and "spread spectrum" radio frequency (RF) techniques, CDMA provides much better and cost-effective voice quality, privacy, system capacity, and flexibility than other wireless technologies, along with enhanced services such as short messaging, e-mail and Internet access. cdmaOne A family of systems in the wireless communications industry utilizing QUALCOMM's CDMA digital technology. Named by the CDMA Development Group (CDG) member companies. Cellular Systems Mobile wireless systems that operate at 800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequencies. Digital Digital technologies offer "multiple access" to radio spectrum. Several subscribers can access the same channel at a time. Voice quality and capacity differs markedly among the various digital technologies. Dual-band Supports telephone service on two separate frequencies: 800 MHz and 1900 MHz Dual-mode Supports both analog and digital modes. Globalstar Low-Earth-Orbiting (LEO) satellite-based digital communications system. GSM Global System for Mobile communications. A digital communications technology developed in the early 1980s to allow for roaming throughout Europe. HDR High Data Rate. High-speed, high-capacity wireless technology that unleashes Internet access by providing up to 2.4 Mbps in a standard bandwidth 1.25 MHz channel. HDR offers a cost-effective, wide area network wireless data solution. Infrastructure All parts of the wireless network, excluding the subscriber handset. Includes the MTSO (switch), Base Stations, Cell Sites, and all links between them. IS-95 In July, 1993, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) adopted a North American interim standard (IS-95) for cellular telecommunications based on QUALCOMM's CDMA technology. PCS Personal Communications Services. Mobile wireless systems that operate at 800-1900 MHz frequencies. TDMA Time Division Multiple Access. A digital wireless technology that divides a narrow radio channel into framed time slots (typically 3 or 8) and allocates a slot to each user. WLL System Wireless Local Loop systems provide fixed (non-mobile) and extended cordless telephone services to users by transmitting voice messages over radio waves from the Public Switched Telephone network (PSTN) to the location of the fixed telephone. WLL systems are an attractive alternative to traditional copper and fiber based fixed services with the potential to be implemented more quickly and at lower cost than wireline services. ================================ Buddie
