RE: RE: RE: Gun discussion I don't know any other society that has an inherent, ingrained 200 year old distrust of government and anyone in a position of power.
This doesn't just reside in the backwaters and mobile home parks. This bizarre sense that arms may, and more likely will, be needed to defend themselves from "something" crosses all economic lines.
I was in Tampa recently playing golf. At very high end courses it is not unusual for members to carry sidearms in their golf bags. I know this because I have seen it. These wealthy white men, in a gated community, do not feel safe being without a 45 for 4hrs, where most people keep their rain jacket. If you ask why, they all say why not, I have a right to. Of course you can't smoke on the covered patio, nor can you play without your shirt tucked in, and definitely no knee high socks...they do have rules.
If anything good comes out of this it will be a new sensibility for those who are ambivalent to gun control and could swing either way, but you'll never change the hardcore fringe, the ones who threaten civil war if you take away their right to "carry" as they call it.
