Update on Indian coal production and imports
It is reported that production of coal in India in February 2013 fell 4.7% YoY on an adjusted basis from a year earlier to 50.75 million tonnes.
It was affected by a two day nationwide strike called by all major trade unions as well as 28 days as compared with 29 days in February 2012.
India produced 440.76 million tonnes of thermal coal and 45.54 million tonnes of coking coal during the 11 month period. Coal India Limited produced a cumulative 398 million tonnes
On the other hand, as per data from the Interocean Group, India imported 12.6 million tonne of the coal in February 2013 up by 35% YoY as against 9.34 million in February 2012 with thermal coal accounting for 10.3 million tonnes and balance 2.3 million tonnes of coking coal
