DoD's MDM, app store to support 100,000 users by September

January 28, 2014 | By Molly Bernhart Walker

The Defense Department will begin rolling out its mobile device management system and mobile application store for unclassified users Jan. 31, with plans to support up to 100,000 users by the end of fiscal 2014, says the Defense Information Systems Agency.

The DoD Mobility Capability, as it's referred to in a Jan. 16 press release from DISA, already supports 1,800 unclassified mobile devices in a limited roll out. The pilot introduced the iPad 3 and 4, iPhone 4S and 5, Samsung 10.1 tablets and Samsung 3S, and the Motorola RAZR to the DoD unclassified network – joining the 80,000 BlackBerry phones already supported by the capability.

In addition to the MDM and app store, version 1 of the capability will include the phased introduction of an approved devices list, supported cellular access, public key infrastructure support, transition of approved applications and mobile support for DoD Enterprise Email, the DOD Global Address List, Tier 2/3 Service Desk Support and Defense Connect Online.

The app store currently supports 16 applications and is vetting more than 90 others. DISA's initial release of the capability will be followed by deployments of new capabilities every 90 days.

"The next major release in second quarter of FY14 adds gateway support on unclassified side and also an office capability package to enable editing of Word documents and other Microsoft Office items," says DISA.

The initial performance period for the contractor responsible for DoD's unclassified mobility capability, Bethesda, Md.-based Digital Management Inc. runs until July 9, 2014. The initial award to DMI was $2.9 million, with four, 6-month option periods costing up to almost $16 million, reports the agency.
