If they can do that, then the institutions will wait two quarters to see the number before piling back in if the numbers are good and trending up.

That's how to beat the market.  Buy in on spec before they do.  Takes patience.  I haven't traded this one very well, but if I had, I would still have bought back in last week.  As for waiting until November for more tax loss selling, that strategy might not work this time.  I think most of the selling has happened absent any more surprises.  Instead, if I was reluctant to commit based on seasonality only, I would pick a price and put in my bid with a deadline in December sometime, and just let it sit there until it is filled, or until I was more comfortable with making the commitment.
