That is a good point but you are also implying there will be no major implosion i.e. mortgage crisis but a more controlled decline due to "fiat" currency debasing itelf.
However, that typically suggest hyper-inflationary conditions ( on "real" assets/commodities) and that would mean extraordinary hardships to families (Governments would try to avoid that with whatever means they have available). Experts calling for "deflation" over "inflation".
Even a small interest rate increase could spell disaster for most.

A small rate increase could totally de-stabilize the mortgage market again with people putting house door keys in envelopes and mailing them back to the institutions and walking away, look at Calgary right now with oil price depression !!)
If gold replaces the US dollar as the international currancy then anything is possible.
