US Oil Sands plans to develop its properties by using a patented approach to oil sands mining that utilizes a citrus based bio-solvent that naturally separates the bitumen from the oil sand. The company says this approach completely eliminates the need for tailings ponds, requires approximately 50% less energy input than traditional oil sands projects, recycles 95% of the water used and employs best practice mining methods to simultaneously mine and reclaim the targeted area. US Oil Sands is fully permitted by Utah's Division of Oil, Gas and Mining to construct the PR Spring Project on its Utah property and first-oil is expected in 2015. US Oil Sands has also begun looking at opportunities in the Athabasca region of Canada and in other parts of the world where the nature and size of the oil sands deposits demand a low-cost, scalable extraction technology. It should be mentioned that Utah's Uinta Basin bitumen deposits contain 90% less sulfur than the bitumen found in Alberta's Athabasca region, meaning they are considered a sweet refinery feedstock. In addition, the Uinta Basin bitumen is less complex to refine - resulting in lower overall greenhouse gas emissions than those associated with refining of other heavy oil feedstocks. In addition, Utah oil sands are "oil wet" - meaning the bitumen adheres directly to the host sand grains while Athabasca oil sands contain a film of connate water between the sand grain and the bitumen and are termed "water wet."
