The black market was worth $ 6.2 billion in 2015 in CanadaThe value of the black cannabis market in Canada reached $ 6.2 billion in 2015, according to a new Statistics Canada study.
The study estimates that the cannabis market was one-half to two-thirds the size of the $ 9.2-billion beer market. The federal agency also calculates that it can amount to between 70 and 90% of the 7 billion wine market.
This inquiry comes at a time when the Government of Canada has introduced legislation in the House of Commons to legalize, regulate and restrict access to cannabis for non-medical purposes.
Canadian cannabis consumption in 2015 is estimated at 697.5 tonnes. Assuming a price range of $ 7.14 per gram to $ 8.84 per gram, the value of cannabis use in Canada in 2015 is estimated to be between $ 5 billion and $ 6.2 billion.
Statistics Canada states that the estimates presented in the study will be updated as new data on cannabis use and other socio-economic information becomes available
