RE:RE:RE:RE:Who are these people waiting to buy legal weed ???Who are these people waiting to buy legal weed?
Answer: Me and most of my rich friends and our aging parents. We wouldn't risk the reputational damage (as most of us don't have prescriptions) of being thought of as a "stoner". We all drink everyday, we do it to relax, to be social, we do it in our own homes at parties and out in bars.
Once legal, we will switch some of that spend to weed. Brand is important. We drink GOOD wine ($20 - $60/bottle), good whiskey, good vodka, craft beer. We frequently give alcohol as gifts when visiting friends. WE DO NOT make home brew beer/wine/etc. Our incomes are in the $80K to $300K, since we're professionals, our income is stable, our mortgages are either paid off or nearly so, we spend freely.
Stats Can shows the top 10% of individual earners brought in over $95K in 2015 in Canada. That is a lot of spending power and we don't buy weed on the street.
We aren't that far off the median. Stats Can says the median household income in Calgary in 2016 was $125,575, Guelph $107K, Ottawa, $118k, Regina $117k, St. John's NL $112K, Yellowknife $177K.
My spend is $1,000 a month on alcohol + restaurant/pub alcohol. We're in the top 20% of the income population, we're the people you see drinving late model BMWs, Lexus SUVs, Benz's, Land Rovers, etc.
Our parents (late 60s/70s+) look kindly on weed for it's medicinal benefits (they have aches and pains). My mom wants some. She's reading about all the benefits weed has. While I'm a little more circumspect, if it makes the old gal happy (and few things do), I'm all for it.
So that is who will be buying legal weed.
