even if we lose the bid, we have sold the specials at a high price - only DeBeers was the buyer. It still raises gross revenue, in fact if we win the bid and don't get our bidding price, we have less revenue than had we lost the bid.
So if managements' only motive was to increase gross sales, they would lose every bid and not risk winning and then having to sell for less.
