COMMODITIES: Oil Drops On Profit Taking Despite Surge In U.S. Growth, Supply Issues
2019-04-26 09:12:43 AM ET (MT Newswires)

09:12 AM EDT, 04/26/2019 (MT Newswires) -- Oil prices were down for the third-straight session early on Friday despite higher than expected growth in the United States as traders took profits after prices rose to six-month highs this week on squeezed supplies.

West Texas Intermediate crude for June delivery was last seen down US$1.11 to US$64.10 per barrel while near-month Brent crude dropped US$1.27 to US$73.08.

The drop came despite unexpectedly robust U.S. growth, with first-quarter gross domestic product rising 3.2% in the first quarter, 100 basis points ahead of expectations. It also comes despite the closure of a 750,000 barrel per day pipeline supplying Russian crude to Europe and the end of sanction waivers on 1.1 million barrels per day of Iranian exports.

"Market repositioning ahead of the U.S. GDP report has reportedly been a driver, as traders reduce long positions," Action Economics said in a research note.
