You need to reread the article ... it wasn't an HCQ trial ... they were using the natural drug chloroquine which is known to have a different profile of more serious side effects than does the chemically-formulated hydroxychloroquine ... that's why the trials in this country are using HCQ and not chloroquine ... and actually HCQ acts primarily to open the gate so the Zinc ions can pass throught the cell wall, move from extracellular to intracellular, and do the major work of inhibiting the replication of the virus within the cell.  The scientific community makes no pretense that they really don't know much about HCQ and what it does at the cellular level.
