cabz, what you describe is known as a trade secret, for example Coca-Cola's recipe. It really is not intellectual property per se since if you can reverse engineer the process or recipe then you are free legally to use that process or recipe. With a true intellectual property you would not be legally able to use the process or recipe without permission of its owner. That said, I would agree that a trade secret is better, if you can pull it off and keep it a secret, because it can work into perpetuity whereas a patent expires. In addition, as ktd describes, countries that are less scrupulous will simply steal the information and use the process or recipe anyway, making it virtually worthless as property. The reason I used the word patent is that I am quite certain that Sam said that they have patents and so I am a little confused now. In addition, I had sent them an email asking them this question and they simply replied that an answer would be forthcoming soon....An answer that I have yet to receive. But in general cabz, I agree with the spirit of what you said and the details of what ktd enumerated.
