RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:German railway buys 30 HS trains for $1.1 billion @ Siemens!Ha ha ha do you mean there will be no cost to go to a train station from you location. Are you currently living at a train station. Lol If it cost you to go to airport then you have to add time and cosr to go to train station and add the time for boarding etc. Boarding and departure will take you longer for a train carring more people. The trip cost in your example is not factoring on the intial cost of building the infrastructure, acquiring land and equipment. Or do you want tax payer to pay for that. Traveling by air in canada is expensive because its a user fee system. You use you pay same should apply for rail. Otherwise it's illegal subsidies to rail industry.

While a Toronto - Montreal flight is only an hour, you need to add in all the extra time and cost to get to/from the airport, cost to park your car or uber/taxi, go through security, board and deplane. And for some there's the extra time/cost to check a bag. Then there's the additional cost/travel time from the destination airport to the city core. All said, the travel time from home to a downtown destination is easily 3+ hours. A high speed train is hop on/hop off and takes you to the core for under that time. There's also comfort and stress factors. Trains are easily more comfortable and less stressful than a plane.

To compare, I took a high speed train from Madrid to Seville, distance is almost the same as Tor-Mtl at just over 500 kms. Travel time was 2hr 20min and the cost was substantially less than flying.

Eventually it becomes beneficial to fly beyond a certain distance but certainly major routes like Toronto to Mt, Toronto to Windsor, Mtl to QC are easier by high speed train than air.

Building high speed train is not going to work either as all little municipalities in between TO and MTL will want train stop at their city and with multiple stops the advantage of high speed rail is gone. Cost of building high speed train will be too high. It will be in billions and you will still not be as quick as commercial flight. Long distance rail travel in North America is not practical.

All true but for sure aircanada and the such are likely lobbying quite heavily agains that since their lucrative market in canada are betwee major centers especially between TO and MTL.

We are like the states when it comes to that...common sense just doesn't make any sense when the politiccians
 are subservient  to established industry

Canada and especially Quebec should be enjoying the best train/subway systems in the world , we should have  be able to travel through all of Canada at record speed annd times

BUT NO

instead we let the company beg for money , give the best contracts out to competition , and eventually leave... we eat our own ... the family finally  realized our govts have no balls and wont stand up to the corrupt WTO... we played by the rules and got beat up ... alot of blame goes to the bomber but the govts have their part of the blame ...once the bomber sells BT our next train/tram/subway projects will cost a fortune ...we could have been the greatest electric mass transit guru .... we will only see the impact once we no longer have leverage in the negotiations with the bomber in the mix ... we truly do not really  apprehend what we are losing ... I hope I am wrong , but I believe we will regret losing the BT division... GLTA

Rail is very big in Europe let the French and German fight it out. Bombardier has no chance of making inroads on Europe now.
