The world must wake up to teh fact that diagnostics are and will be every bit as importanat as vaccines and therapeutics.
When they roll out vaccines there will not be enough for everyone. The process will take 1 - 2 years to get everyone vacinated (ssuming one or more are found to be effective) Makes sense IMO to do an antibody test and not waste vaccines on people that already have sufficient antibodies (I have heard estimates as high as 10 X the number of people have had teh virus versus the number officially diagnosed).
And , thereaputics are likely to be wasted on people that are not at high risk of the most severe form of the disease (e.g those without elevated IL-6 cytokines, etc.)
It seems to me that the ultimate Covid-19 solution/strategy is 4 part
1. prevention, slow the spread, masks, distancing, etc. (lower the incidence)
2. therapeutics (lower the death rate)
3. vaccines
4 Diagnostics (high accuracy antibody testing and triage testing) - to lower the death rate and more effectively spread the health care dollars, including monies spent on testing, getting people back to work, etc.
IMO THE NEWS HAS FOCUSSED ON 1 - 3 BUT HAS YET TO FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF # 4.
