Yup, I own 48 individual equities (no, they are not in a mutual fund - I own direct) - yes, I have heard what people say and yes, I can probably start my own index fund, but you have to bear in mind I have been doing this for a very long time. Which is why I don't panic during dips like this - with experience comes awareness of market cycles. Been through this before. Many times.
